What makes us unique?

Our academic and co-curricular program is designed to challenge our students to think critically, reason

analytically, communicate clearly and solve problems. These four pillars of excellence and mastery will

be accomplished through an integrated curriculum in which students investigate essential questions.

Students also participate in a number of extracurricular activities such as debate, robotics, ceramics,

chess, photography and global travel to enhance experiential learning.

Community:

Throughout the year Baltimore Collegiate hosts a number of events and opportunities to foster community engagement and partnership. Such events include, but are not limited to, Volunteer Day, Community Clean Up, partnership initiatives with area schools, sports camps and summer learning programs. Some additional examples are outlined below:

Professional development in collaboration with other schools/staff

Partnerships for annual student leadership summits

Hosting arts events for the surrounding community

Mission and Vision:

Baltimore Collegiate School for Boys provides the finest liberal arts education possible to Baltimore’s next generation of young men, ensuring that they will become responsible citizens trained to lead and serve our community, our nation, and our world.

We push gents to be aware of who they are, where they are and their areas of needed growth.)

Restorative Practices (peer mediation and conflict resolution help to foster each boy’s emotional development)

Baltimore International Academy

What makes us unique?

Baltimore International Academy (BIA) has two signature programs, full Language Immersion and the International Baccalaureate. Language immersion program students learn core subjects (Science, Social Studies, Math, Target Language Arts) through one of five languages; Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin), Arabic, Russian or French. Students become fluent in speaking, understanding, reading and writing in their target languages. Beginning in the second grade, students receive one hour of English language arts daily to learn the mechanics of their native tongue. International Baccalaureate (IB) students learn through inquiry-based instruction, project-based assessments, and collaborative group work. The international mindedness and critical thinking skills they gain by learning through the IB programs is already setting them apart; their scores are higher than their City counterparts in the State’s reading and math assessments.

Community:

BIA hosts cultural and fund-raising events. We have a cultural event for each of our target languages (Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, French). We have donated funds and goods to homeless shelters, women’s shelters (in Baltimore area), to Puerto Rico, Haiti, and the Philippines (hurricanes and earthquake disasters).

Mission and Vision:

Baltimore International Academy is committed to providing an academically rigorous, internationally orientated and socially responsible learning environment that challenges all students to achieve. Our programs provide a culturally and linguistically diverse education to help our students develop the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills necessary to participate responsibly in a changing world.

Learn More

Baltimore International Academy (BIA) is a free, public charter school chartered by Baltimore City Public Schools and open to all Baltimore City residents. BIA serves students in Grades K-8. Kindergarten and First Grade are the typical entry points for immersion programs. BIA is funded by Baltimore City Public Schools, the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and the United States Department of Education grant funds.

Our Program

BIA offers both language immersion and is seeking candidacy for the International Baccalaureate (IB) program in the Primary and Middle Years Programames. Students choose one of five language immersion tracks (Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, or French) and become fully immersed in their target language for their entire career at BIA. By the end of the program, students are bilingual and biliterate in both English and their chosen target language. Students will also have the opportunity to take another language as an elective once they reach the Middle School level.

Language immersion programs originated in Canada in the 1960s and they are designed for students who are NOT native speakers of the target language. Over 95% of BIA students speak only English at home. Students typically enter the program in Kindergarten or First Grade and the vast majority do not have any background in the target language.

English

In Kindergarten and First Grade, BIA students are learning to read and write in their target language only. However, in 2nd Grade, English Language Arts (ELA) is introduced as a formal subject for one hour per day. Students will go to a separate teacher who specializes in English Language Arts. Students will continue to receive ELA for one hour per day from 2nd Grade all the way through 8th Grade. While BIA introduces English in 2nd Grade, some immersion programs wait until 5th Grade to introduce English.

Homework

Homework will come home in the target language. We do not expect our parents to be proficient in the target language, and we know that the vast majority of them are not! Homework will always be a review of what was already learned in class. Parents should provide a quiet place for their students to complete homework and encourage them to complete all homework to the best of their ability. It is the teacher's responsibility to check for understanding and make sure that the student is grasping the concepts being taught. However, the teacher will usually send a homework calendar home in English so that parents know what their children should be working on each night. Homework may also be posted on the BIA website.

Our Mission

The mission of City Neighbors Hamilton is to provide an extraordinary public school education with high academic achievement for all students. Our ultimate goal for our school is that through project-based learning, arts integration, parental involvement and community outreach, the students leave enlivened, with deep awareness of themselves, their families and the outside community, and with the capacity to be good citizens.

Our Educational Approach

The staff of City Neighbors Hamilton share the goal that every parent has for his/her child: to learn and be successful in school and in life. The educational approach at City Neighbors Hamilton focuses on teaching for thinking and understanding. Using the State Content Standards as an academic framework, we set high expectations for every child. We believe in a project-based learning environment where children can learn more in the process of exploring ideas, making predictions, building models of their ideas, and testing outcomes as they apply their knowledge. Through this process, we encourage children to be empowered by the construction of knowledge, by reflection upon their own lives, and through consideration of what is good for the community at large. As a result, our students become passionate learners as we engage them in work that makes sense to them.

Our Vision

At CNH our classrooms serve as individual model communities where issues are discussed, differences in perspectives are welcomed and children work cooperatively, rather than competitively. The CNH governance model – including parents, business and community leaders, teachers, students and the principal – reflect our commitment to cooperative governance, based on the principles of human dignity, consensus, and freedom. Our belief and experience is that when given a strong structure to support generative thinking as well as meaningful activities to perform, all children and adults strive for excellence. Because of this focus, CNH’s impact on the lives of students and families and the community will be powerful, positive and long lasting.

Our Philosophy

Our unique model combines a progressive education with a powerful governance model that relies on meaningful parent involvement, community outreach, and the inspiration of the schools of Reggio Emilia.

Our Statement on Diversity

Diversity is essential to who we are. In this spirit, City Neighbors Hamilton embraces the diversity within our school, community and world. We endeavor to create an environment that values all people of any ability, age, family structure, gender, gender identity, race, religion, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status. We strive to create this environment through our curriculum, interactions, staffing, policies and procedures. As the families, staff, and students of City Neighbors Hamilton, we accept the responsibility to help every member of our school feel safe, respected, and valued.

What is Reggio Emilia?

Reggio Emilia is the name given to a teaching style that has evolved in the Northern Italian municipality of Reggio Emilia. Fundamental to this educational philosophy is the perception of children as being strong, intellectually rich, and possessing great potential. In this educational model, the teacher works with children to stimulate and deepen critical thought in a research partnership. In Reggio Emilia, knowledge is seen as something that is socially constructed and should be based on ideas and experiences that are real and meaningful to the child.

What About ConneXions?

ConneXions School for the Arts (#325), is a public charter school founded in 2002 with a mission to cultivate academic and artistic excellence, cultural identity and community awareness. While we started out with 6th grade only, we now have 335 students enrolled from 6th-12th grade including a LifeSkills Program and have graduated Seniors since 2010.

We are located at 2801 N. Dukeland Street (the former Lemmel Middle School) and share the building with two other city schools. ConneXions’ Main Office is located on the ground floor of the building and our entrance is on the North side of the campus (next to the adjacent daycare playground.

Following the Coalition Of Essential Schools model, ConneXions helps students learn to use their minds well, through a philosophy of “depth over breadth” and an inquiry based approach. A tone of decency and trust allows teachers to build relationships with students, providing them with a personalized education and follows the idea of student as worker and teacher as coach. Every student is expected to succeed and is required to prove their mastery through exhibition.

Aside from rigorous academics, ConneXions boasts a host of electives that include Performing Arts like Drama, African Dance, Modern Dance, and African Drum in addition to the Visual Arts of Painting/ Drawing, Printmaking, Design, Audio Visual and Photography. The Performing Arts Travel Squad has gained a citywide reputation of excellence and has performed to rave reviews in both local and national venues. Students of the visual arts have exhibited work at The University Of Baltimore, The Creative Alliance and The Eubie Blake National Jazz Institute and Cultural Center.

At ConneXions, we have a unique model of leadership. Co-directors are our version of principals. Rather than just acting in that role, co-directors have a variety of duties that take them from the classroom to the office and everywhere in between.

What makes us unique:

Furman L. Templeton Preparatory Academy through the utilization of a year-round schooling model, provides more consistent opportunities to engage in instruction at the school level. Moreover, the year-round schedule allows the school-based teams time to utilize data to more frequently provide targeted support during the times between sessions to meet the individual needs of the students. The focus on technology allows students the opportunity to interact with hardware not current and/or relevant in many of the homes in the surrounding area. All students have the opportunity to utilize 21st century technology as students in grades 2nd-5th have their own Netbook to assist with accessing the curriculum. Students in Pre-K-1st grades have class iPads and grade level computer labs Our afterschool program provided by The Child First Authority includes intramural sports, academic enrichment, and fine arts activities for all students.

Community:

For many parents in the community, the school is a critical resource and support throughout the early years of their child’s life. Since 2012, we have partnered with the University of Maryland School of Social Work through the Promise Heights Initiative, to improve the educational, health and developmental outcomes of children from birth to young adult in the West Baltimore community of Upton/Druid Heights. FLTPA is one of four schools receiving the comprehensive services of this program. The key partners of the program include: B’More for Healthy Babies, Little Flowers Early Childhood Care, YMCA Head Start, and Reading Partners. Promise Heights also hosts two Parent University groups: one for parents of children 0-3 and one for children 3-5. These partners and structures bring continuity, considerable resources and stability to the families in the community

Mission and Vision:

Furman L. Templeton Preparatory Academy is in the Upton community endeavoring to lay the foundation for success in middle, high school, college, and the 21st century workplace for our students. The comprehensive educational programs for students and families include a Head Start Program, Pre-K, and a kindergarten to fifth grade which creates a pipeline to support academic outcomes. The programs within the school are designed to support the students and their families We aim to increase the academic achievement of all students, in partnership with the community to ensure that our students have the attitudes, skills, and proficiencies needed to be successful at each of these stages. Our mission is to accelerate the opportunities and outcomes for our children by demanding nothing, but excellence form the students, staff, and community. The school leaders, staff, and parents at FLTPA believe that great outcomes for our students can be achieved using the Learn, Love, Live framework. Learn: We combine a rigorous academic curriculum with research-based instructional practices, data-driven decision-making, partnerships with community resources and technology. The school uses the latest technology to engage and motivate students and to help teachers deliver the academic experience. Love: FLTPA actively promotes and embraces core values to help our students to resolve conflict and create a solid foundation on which to build relationships. We use the model of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to identify, adapt and sustain effective school-wide behavior support practices. Live: All students have the opportunity to take advantage of multiple field trips: one trip is out of state. These trips introduce our students to new environments and expose them to a broader world. The school climate is one that encourages learning, supports educator development, and parent engagement.

The academic offerings reflect personalized learning that fosters curiosity and innovation accomplished through a loving, supportive environment achieved in partnership with our broader community.

At Patterson Park Public Charter School (PPPCS), it is our privilege to serve a diverse community and our responsibility to foster inclusivity. What makes us unique:

The Crossroads School is a public, charter middle school in Baltimore City’s Fells Point operated by Living Classrooms Foundation. Our instructional program emphasizes the mastery of standards-based skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and science and provides students with ongoing opportunities to apply these skills to relevant, hands-on learning projects. Technology, cooperative learning, critical thinking, and real-world application of knowledge are all essential components of the school's core curriculum. Crossroads has a strong school culture where everyone works together to support each other and adhere to the school’s Five Promises: Commitment to Quality, Honor and Integrity, Contribution, Perseverance, and No Excuses. Crossroads students also benefit from an after school program, tutoring, mentoring, student-mastery conferences, and individualized guidance counseling. Our small size, extraordinary faculty, community connections, and unwavering focus on the development of academic and social skills help prepare our students to be successful in high school and beyond.

Community:

Living Classrooms’ Turning the Corner Achievement Program (T-CAP) works closely with school leadership to provide Crossroads students with engaging enrichment programming in school and after school that supplements the regular academic program and supports student achievement. Tutoring, with an emphasis on reading and math skills, is a significant focus to assist students who are struggling in the classroom. Crossroads has an hour-long, bi-weekly Mentoring Program, recruiting enough volunteers from local businesses including Morgan Stanley, Constellation, Brown Advisory, and others, for all students to have an individual mentor. And lastly, the Yoga Action Project is another example of Crossroads’ community engagement initiatives, where students teach yoga to local professionals.

Mission and Vision:

The Crossroads School creates the space for children to evolve as individuals and as a community through urgency, rigor, expectations, and kindness.

What makes us unique?

The Green School is dedicated to creating an educational community that promotes active and engaged learning in our natural environment. We have developed our curriculum so that students in each grade are engaged in a year-long study organized around an essential question, which culminates in an action project in the environment in or around the school. These hands-on environmental projects develop students’ stewardship for the environment while providing an authentic context for the reading, writing, math, science, and social studies concepts and skills learned in the classroom.

The year-long study at each grade is organized around different aspects of the essential question “How do the choices that we make on land impact water quality and life in and around the Chesapeake Bay?” As part of this study, our first graders raise diamondback terrapins; our 2nd graders learn about native plants and improve the schoolyard habitat by planting native plants in our many gardens; our 3rd graders study issues of sustainability and make recommendations for ways in which our school can be more “green”; our 4th graders raise oyster spat in the Baltimore Harbor; and our 5th graders become organic farming experts and plant and harvest our Organic Teaching Garden each year.

Community:

The Green School has deep roots in the community of Belair Edison and with local environmental organizations. We partner with Belair Edison Neighborhoods on a variety of projects in the neighborhood, including Art in the Park installations, painting storm drains, and neighborhood clean-ups. In support of our environmental missions, we participate in the National Aquarium ‘s Terrapins in the Classroom Project and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Oyster Restoration Project. We have a partnership with the Baltimore Algebra Project and are developing a partnership with Morgan State University to bring math tutors to our afterschool programming. We also partner with Towson University to bring student teachers to the school to support our Arts programming.

Mission and Vision:

The Green School of Baltimore is dedicated to creating an educational community that promotes active and engaged learning in our natural environment. With the world as our classroom, we encourage students to take risks, ask questions, explore, collaborate, and find solutions to relevant, real-world problems so they may cultivate their innate curiosity; become stewards of the environment; and begin their journey toward lifelong learning.
