Charter public schools give families an opportunity to choose the school experience that best fits their needs and—like every other public school—they are tuition-free for any student to attend that resides in a district that has approved public charter schools.
When charter schools have more students who want to attend than they have seats available, they use a random lottery system to determine their enrollment.

What makes us unique?
Baltimore International Academy (BIA) has two signature programs, full Language Immersion and the International Baccalaureate. Language immersion program students learn core subjects (Science, Social Studies, Math, Target Language Arts) through one of five languages; Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin), Arabic, Russian or French. Students become fluent in speaking, understanding, reading and writing in their target languages. Beginning in the second grade, students receive one hour of English language arts daily to learn the mechanics of their native tongue. International Baccalaureate (IB) students learn through inquiry-based instruction, project-based assessments, and collaborative group work. The international mindedness and critical thinking skills they gain by learning through the IB programs is already setting them apart; their scores are higher than their City counterparts in the State’s reading and math assessments.
Community:
BIA hosts cultural and fund-raising events. We have a cultural event for each of our target languages (Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, French). We have donated funds and goods to homeless shelters, women’s shelters (in Baltimore area), to Puerto Rico, Haiti, and the Philippines (hurricanes and earthquake disasters).

Baltimore International Academy (BIA) is a free, public charter school chartered by Baltimore City Public Schools and open to all Baltimore City residents. BIA serves students in Grades K-8. Kindergarten and First Grade are the typical entry points for immersion programs. BIA is funded by Baltimore City Public Schools, the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and the United States Department of Education grant funds.
Our Program
BIA offers both language immersion and is seeking candidacy for the International Baccalaureate (IB) program in the Primary and Middle Years Programames. Students choose one of five language immersion tracks (Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, or French) and become fully immersed in their target language for their entire career at BIA. By the end of the program, students are bilingual and biliterate in both English and their chosen target language. Students will also have the opportunity to take another language as an elective once they reach the Middle School level.
Language immersion programs originated in Canada in the 1960s and they are designed for students who are NOT native speakers of the target language. Over 95% of BIA students speak only English at home. Students typically enter the program in Kindergarten or First Grade and the vast majority do not have any background in the target language.
English
In Kindergarten and First Grade, BIA students are learning to read and write in their target language only. However, in 2nd Grade, English Language Arts (ELA) is introduced as a formal subject for one hour per day. Students will go to a separate teacher who specializes in English Language Arts. Students will continue to receive ELA for one hour per day from 2nd Grade all the way through 8th Grade. While BIA introduces English in 2nd Grade, some immersion programs wait until 5th Grade to introduce English.
Homework
Homework will come home in the target language. We do not expect our parents to be proficient in the target language, and we know that the vast majority of them are not! Homework will always be a review of what was already learned in class. Parents should provide a quiet place for their students to complete homework and encourage them to complete all homework to the best of their ability. It is the teacher's responsibility to check for understanding and make sure that the student is grasping the concepts being taught. However, the teacher will usually send a homework calendar home in English so that parents know what their children should be working on each night. Homework may also be posted on the BIA website.

What About ConneXions?
ConneXions School for the Arts (#325), is a public charter school founded in 2002 with a mission to cultivate academic and artistic excellence, cultural identity and community awareness. While we started out with 6th grade only, we now have 335 students enrolled from 6th-12th grade including a LifeSkills Program and have graduated Seniors since 2010.
We are located at 2801 N. Dukeland Street (the former Lemmel Middle School) and share the building with two other city schools. ConneXions’ Main Office is located on the ground floor of the building and our entrance is on the North side of the campus (next to the adjacent daycare playground.
Following the Coalition Of Essential Schools model, ConneXions helps students learn to use their minds well, through a philosophy of “depth over breadth” and an inquiry based approach. A tone of decency and trust allows teachers to build relationships with students, providing them with a personalized education and follows the idea of student as worker and teacher as coach. Every student is expected to succeed and is required to prove their mastery through exhibition.
Aside from rigorous academics, ConneXions boasts a host of electives that include Performing Arts like Drama, African Dance, Modern Dance, and African Drum in addition to the Visual Arts of Painting/ Drawing, Printmaking, Design, Audio Visual and Photography. The Green School is dedicated to creating an educational community that promotes active and engaged learning in our natural environment. We have developed our curriculum so that students in each grade are engaged in a year-long study organized around an essential question, which culminates in an action project in the environment in or around the school. These hands-on environmental projects develop students’ stewardship for the environment while providing an authentic context for the reading, writing, math, science, and social studies concepts and skills learned in the classroom.
The year-long study at each grade is organized around different aspects of the essential question “How do the choices that we make on land impact water quality and life in and around the Chesapeake Bay?” As part of this study, our first graders raise diamondback terrapins; our 2nd graders learn about native plants and improve the schoolyard habitat by planting native plants in our many gardens; our 3rd graders study issues of sustainability and make recommendations for ways in which our school can be more “green”; our 4th graders raise oyster spat in the Baltimore Harbor; and our 5th graders become organic farming experts and plant and harvest our Organic Teaching Garden each year.
Community:
The Green School has deep roots in the community of Belair Edison and with local environmental organizations. We partner with Belair Edison Neighborhoods on a variety of projects in the neighborhood, including Art in the Park installations, painting storm drains, and neighborhood clean-ups. In support of our environmental missions, we participate in the National Aquarium ‘s Terrapins in the Classroom Project and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Oyster Restoration Project. We have a partnership with the Baltimore Algebra Project and are developing a partnership with Morgan State University to bring math tutors to our afterschool programming. We also partner with Towson University to bring student teachers to the school to support our Arts programming.

Legends Charter School has a school departmentalized design. Departmentalization is the practice of dividing the instructional responsibility of teachers according to the content area. The DSEL provides direct support and interventions to students, consults with Fellows and Teachers, families, and other school employed mental health professionals to improve support strategies, work with school administrators to enhance school-wide practices and policies, and collaborate with community providers to coordinate needed services. The DSEL will consult on complicated cases where there are significant needs or risk factors.
Legends Charter School will incorporate a unique focus on financial literacy, introducing the Legends Full Circle of Financial Education. This exceptional financial education offers Legends Financial Literacy Curriculum, Legends Circle of Investing Enrichment, and Legends Virtual Stock Simulation Enrichment. The financial literacy curriculum, in line with State of Maryland Financial Literacy standards, addresses areas of knowledge and understanding fundamental to financial literacy: earning income, buying goods and services, using credit, saving, investing, protecting and insuring. Legends will offer scholars a unique one hundred percent voluntary enrichment opportunity to establish investment accounts with TD Bank's sister company TD Ameritrade. Legends Scholars will additionally be able to participate in the TD Virtual Stock Simulation, where they will be allowed to invest in the market through a stock simulation. This program will be led by the Legends Financial Literacy Director and a TD Bank Instructor who will not be responsible for the student's academic progress.

In partnership with students, parents and Prince George’s County community, Legends Charter School will provide an advanced liberal arts college preparatory education, incorporating financial education and supplemented with Blended Learning to personalize scholars learning experience and establish robust financial portfolios.

In addition to the TD Bank Wow! Zone curriculum, Legends will offer the scholars a unique enrichment opportunity to establish investment accounts with TD Bank's sister company TD Ameritrade. This will be facilitated by the Legends Financial Literacy Coordinator and a TD Bank Instructor. Families will also have access to free TD Bank and TD Ameritrade resources. Additionally, for families who choose additional support, they will have an option to speak with certified Financial Planners. We will hold monthly brown bag sessions to provide information on what it means to have an investment account and facilitate opening the account. Families that participate will be responsible for signing authorizations and waivers. A yearly calendar of monthly speakers and topics will be developed in conjunction with our stakeholder's needs and interests. Legends will provide continued on-site and online support for parents, guardians, and the Legends community.
